A Seat at the Table:LGBTQ Representation in New York Politics
Thursday, June 24, 2021 12:00 PM
LaGuardia and Wagner Archives and the Commercial Photography Program will open the exhibit "A Seat at the Table: LGBTQ Representation in New York Politics." Through oral history, video, and photography, this exhibit explores the personal narratives and political experiences of fourteen New York City LGBTQ elected officials in the City Council and State Legislature. “A Seat at the Table” examines the intersection of being queer and being political, documenting the ascent of these individuals into electoral politics. It argues that these representatives changed New York politics since the 1980s by expanding the definition of civil rights, increasing the visibility of queer people, and funding a range of LGBTQ organizations and institutions. Some exhibit participants include Speaker of the City Council Corey Johnson, former Speaker Christine Quinn, and Assembly member Deborah Glick.
